Normally, I don’t openly discuss my political opinions online because I hate it when people disagree with me…and when it comes to politics, there’s ALWAYS someone out there who will disagree (Super annoying, am I right?).
But today, I feel as though I should not be making light of a situation that everyone in our country needs to be extremely (!!! :O) concerned about.
Yesterday afternoon while the world and I were preoccupied with the anticipation and excitement for new year’s eve festivities, President Obama signed in the H.R. 1540 law, the Defense Authorization bill, which included some changes from previous years.
I’ll try my best to keep this short, mostly because I think the people that need to realize this are probably people who don’t really like to read all that much.
SO, in a nutshell (sort of)
Obama signed this bill that authorizes the government to detain anyone that they suspect to be a “terrorist”…these are United States citizens that can be arrested and detained with no evidence (just suspicion).
If you like to pay for your things in cash, have more than 7 days worth of food in your home, or…I dont know, if you’re a political protestor, the government has reason to believe you may be engaging in terrorist activites.
Julian Assange? Yeah, he’ll probably be a goner soon enough.
The bill also gives the military another $662 billion dollars to spend for defense and “interests abroad”. Those last two words are CRUCIAL and people need to realize that this will mean more wars.
Where the hell are we even getting $662 BILLION DOLLARS FROM? It’s no secret that our country owes way too much money; we’re in way over our heads in debt. I’m just a little confused about how that’s going to work. If anyone can clear that confusion up for me, it’d be awesome.
Furthermore, Mr. Obama signed this bill even though he openly voiced his “reservations about the bill”. RIIIGHT…
All should remember that talk is cheap, and it doesn’t matter what he said, because he still signed this bill into law. If the president believes a bill is unconstitutional, he has a duty to veto it as our president.
Instead, he (along with congress) have enacted a law that undermines the very constitutional foundation that our country was built upon. Basically, what he’s saying is that even though he does have the power to take away ALL of your rights, he won’t do it. He’s literally saying that we’re just going to have to “trust him on this one.”
Essentially, the military preeetty much runs our country. Defense is important, of course, but when the Military-Industry-Complex has interests that are held to a higher priority than the welfare of American citizens, we should be worried.
It’s not just the bill itself that scares me, but also the precedent that it sets for future lawmaking. With recent events, we should open our eyes to the fact that our world is in a lot more trouble than we thought.
There are definitely many more issues regarding this bill, but seriously…I’m actually so sad to the point that I really really really don’t want to write about this anymore.
I find it so ironic that Mr. Obama had built an entire presidential campaign around the words “Hope” and “Change”. He has definitely brought change, but not the kind we had all hoped for.
